We are thrilled to announce that The Infants' Home will be opening a new long day care centre in Engadine in 2025. This marks an exciting new chapter for us as we extend our reach to serve even more children and families in need.
While starting school is an exciting milestone for children and their family, it is also a big adjustment and can be a little daunting for all concerned. Fortunately, there are many simple things that parents and carers can do to help their child (and themselves) experience a positive transition.
The recent Soccajoeys program for preschool children at The Infants’ Home provided many opportunities for children to develop a range of skills, build their confidence and, most importantly, have fun.
Experiencing big feelings (or ‘tantrums’) is a normal part of early childhood development. Parents and carers play an important role in helping their child to manage their big feelings and to learn to self-regulate their emotions as they develop.
The Infants’ Home’s Fathers’, Male Carers and Children’s Playgroup is a program where dads, male carers and children can come together to have fun and connection with each other.
Over the past few weeks, groups of children have been visiting the space where our outdoor classroom will be to connect with nature in meaningful, child-led ways.
At The Infants' Home, our vision for a nature-based outdoor learning space is coming to life.
The Infants’ Home brings together (or ‘integrates’) early intervention and early childhood education and care within our daily childcare programs for all children. This helps ensure that every child receives the level of support they need to learn, develop and thrive in the critical early years.
Unfortunately, childhood illness and childcare often go hand in hand, especially when children first enrol and are still building their immune systems. Good hygiene practices in their centre and at home and keeping children home when they are unwell can help reduce the spread of infection.
While there are many guidelines for how much time children should spend on screens, these are not always practical in the modern age, and sometimes other strategies are needed to navigate this issue.
Sydney Hope was The Infants’ Homes’ first ‘foundling’. At 7.40pm on 3 June 1874, a three-week-old infant was found on the steps of The Sydney Foundling Institute, which had been operating for less than a month.
In July we were delighted to welcome a group of nine keen volunteers from our long-term supporter Goldman Sachs to carry our annual children’s sandpit refresh through their signature Community TeamWorks volunteering program.
Small world play offers many benefits for children’s learning and development. It helps children to process and learn about the world around them as they explore real and imaginary situations within miniature play settings.
Nature play, in which children explore, play and learn in natural environments, offers many benefits for children’s learning, development, health and wellbeing.
On 8 May 2024 we were delighted to host the first of our 150th Anniversary Year celebrations for our community.
Founded in May 1874, The Infants’ Home began as a rescue operation for abandoned children and unmarried mothers and their babies. Over 150 years The Infants’ Home has evolved to meet the changing needs of children and families.
Equity and inclusion for all members of The Infants’ Home’s community is central to our mission and our everyday work. Our community includes our children, families and staff as well as others in the wider community with whom we work.
Attending a playgroup is a wonderful way for children and their parents and carers to come together regularly in an informal setting where they can play, learn and connect with others.
The Infants’ Home’s Corporate Volunteer Program is a fantastic way for work teams to boost team morale, have fun and give back to the community.
Learning to use the toilet is a big milestone for a child. For many parents and carers, approaching toilet learning can be a little overwhelming. However, with patience, and by placing the child at the centre of the process, toilet learning can be an empowering and positive experience for all.
