The Outdoor Classroom
A Space Shaped by Land, Culture and Play
Our purpose-built Outdoor Classroom has been designed to inspire nature-based learning, play, and discovery for children in our community.
Every element of the Outdoor Classroom has been designed with purpose. It comprises features including:
- Sandstone Scramble: for climbing, balancing, and imaginative exploration
- Possum Hill: a natural lookout point with many ways available for children to reach the hilltop from every side
- The Tunnel: to inspire creative and imaginative play, and to move with stealth under Possum Hill
- Clamber and Stepping Logs: encouraging balance, strength, coordination, and creative play
- Tree House and Rope Bridge to Possum Hill: for balancing, active play and adventure
- Pathways: weaving movement, adventure, and accessibility for all throughout the space
- Native Plants: connecting with nature and the land and sensory experience
- Water Misters: for sensory and scientific exploration
- Yarning Circle: inspired by the traditions of First Nations peoples, this a collaborative space for listening, communicating, learning, sharing and creating a sense of community.
Why a Nature-Inspired Learning Space is Important
Bringing Learning to Life Through Nature Pedagogy
The Outdoor Classroom offers children opportunities to explore nature and engage in hands-on, play-based and child-led learning. Whether it’s investigating plants, observing wildlife, or simply enjoying the sensory experiences of the outdoors, nature-based learning environments give children the space to explore and take risks. Through these experiences, they develop their curiosity, creativity, resilience and a deeper understanding of the world around them.
