The Infants’ Home Outdoor Classroom Project

At The Infants' Home, our vision for a nature-based outdoor learning space is coming to life.

Published on 30 August 2024

At The Infants’ Home, we believe in giving children access to natural environments where they can be curious, creative, and develop an appreciation for the world around them. This exciting project is a testament to this belief and will provide children with a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in nature, which we know has exceptional benefits to their development and wellbeing.

The benefits of nature-based learning
Children are naturally inclined to explore the world around them, and nature offers experiences that are often missing in traditional indoor classrooms and childcare centres.

Research shows that learning in natural settings contributes significantly to a child’s physical, cognitive, and social-emotional development. The sensory experiences provided by nature—such as the feel of the wind, the sound of birds, or the sight of flowers blooming—stimulate a child’s senses and enhance their ability to learn.

Consultations with children

Over the last few weeks, children at The Infants’ Home have going on excursions to the Outdoor Classroom site with their educators, and we have been actively seeking the children’s feedback, ideas, and observations whilst they explore the space. Observing what naturally draws children’s interest and engagement, can help us to develop the space in way that supports their needs and interests.

With babies and toddlers, where verbal feedback may be limited, we rely heavily on observation. Their interactions with the environment offer insights that help us plan future nature-based learning environments that are meaningful and engaging.

The latest news

We have been working to ensure that this space will provide opportunities for exploration, creativity, and a connection to the natural world for children.

  • Drawing Inspiration from Proven Models
We’ve studied successful programs like forest play, bush kindy, and other nature-based initiatives. Understanding the ethos behind these models has helped shape our approach and form the basis of this project.
  • Collaboration with Landscape Architects
We’ve initiated collaborations with landscape architects who share our vision and deeply understand the importance of creating a space that resonates with children.
  • Creating a Pedagogical Framework
To guide the learning opportunities within the outdoor classroom, we are developing a pedagogical framework which will be crucial in guiding our integrated teams as they engage in supporting play and learning, through the ethos of nature pedagogy.
  • Honouring First Nations Knowledge
Central to our planning is the involvement of First Nations knowledge holders. By integrating their wisdom, we aim to ensure that our outdoor classroom respects and embodies a Country-centered approach, creating a space that honours the land and its’ history.
  • Upholding Our Core Values
Throughout the planning process, we have remained true to the core values of The Infants’ Home. We’ve ensured alignment with essential guiding documents, including the Early Years Learning Framework, the National Quality Framework, and the ECA Code of Ethics. These principles are reflected in every aspect of our outdoor classroom project.
