What is a ‘Supported Playgroup’?

Supported playgroups are led by qualified facilitators. They provide play-based learning experiences for children to enhance their wellbeing, development and social skills. They also support parents and carers to develop their parenting skills and confidence and to build their social connections.

Supporting Early Childhood Development

The early years are critical for a child’s brain development, social skills and emotional wellbeing. Supported playgroups offer age‑appropriate activities that encourage learning through play, helping children develop language, motor skills, curiosity and confidence. Children benefit from intentional, planned play experiences that support healthy development while allowing freedom to choose, explore and have fun.

Building Stronger Parent and Carer Confidence

Supported playgroups provide parents and carers with reassurance and practical guidance from qualified professionals in a relaxed, non‑judgemental setting. Families can ask questions, share experiences and gain confidence in responding to their child’s needs. This support helps parents feel more capable and connected and can strengthen family relationships at home. The extent to which parent or carers wish to share any concerns or ask questions is respected.

Reducing Isolation and Strengthening Community Connections

For many families, supported playgroups are a lifeline, especially for those experiencing isolation, vulnerability or limited support networks. Playgroups create a sense of belonging, helping parents and carers form friendships and build social connections within their local community. These relationships can have lasting positive impacts on family wellbeing and resilience long after playgroup sessions end.

Early Support When It Matters Most

One of the key benefits of supported playgroups is early intervention. Skilled facilitators are well placed to notice developmental concerns or family challenges early and can help connect families to additional services if needed. This proactive approach ensures families receive the right support at the right time, reducing barriers to accessing help and promoting positive outcomes for children.

Inclusive, Safe and Welcoming Spaces

Supported playgroups at The Infants’ Home are inclusive, culturally safe and welcoming for all families. They provide a secure space where diversity is celebrated and every child and family is valued. By meeting families where they are, supported playgroups help create strong foundations for lifelong learning, wellbeing and connection.

Through play, support and community, supported playgroups help children thrive and families flourish—laying the groundwork for brighter futures from the very beginning.
