The Benefits of Integrated Early Childhood Education and Care
Why is early learning important?
The first years of a child’s life are critical—more than 90% of brain development occurs before the age of five. Having positive early experiences and participating in quality early learning programs helps lay the foundations for future success, creating a strong base for a child’s later learning, development, behaviour and wellbeing.
Embedding Speech Pathology and Occupational Therapy within mainstream childcare settings is a powerful, proactive approach to supporting children’s development during their early learning years. When therapy is integrated into a child’s everyday setting it becomes more meaningful, more effective, and has a long-lasting impact on their overall wellbeing.
How do Occupational Therapists and Speech Pathologists support children?
Speech pathologists support the development of children’s communication skills, including speaking, listening, understanding language, using non-verbal cues and making social connections. At The Infants’ Home, they work closely with our educators to identify children who may be experiencing delays or difficulties in speech and language development and embed speech and language strategies into daily routines and play-based learning.
Occupational therapists (OTs) help children develop the physical, sensory, and cognitive skills they needed for everyday tasks such as playing, dressing, feeding, and writing. At The Infants’ Home, they work with our educators to create environments and experiences that support children’s independence and participation.
Seamless Integration into Everyday Learning
Speech and occupational therapists can work directly within the learning environment, modelling strategies, adapting routines, and embedding therapy into play and classroom activities. This team-teaching approach makes therapy more relevant and inclusive, supporting all children—while specifically targeting those with individual needs. Learning becomes more accessible and engaging for every child.
The Power of Collaboration
When educators, speech pathologists, and occupational therapists work together, children benefit from a consistent and coordinated approach. Educators gain valuable insights and practical strategies to support each child’s learning and development, while therapists gain a deeper understanding of each child’s behaviour and development within the group setting.
This team-based approach also supports families. Parents and caregivers receive consistent messages and practical tips from both educators and allied health professionals, fostering stronger home-school partnerships and helping families support their child’s development at home.
Using an integrated model in early education environments ensures that all children, regardless of their starting point, have the best opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive.
Through collaboration, knowledge sharing, and a shared commitment to each child’s success, educators and allied health professionals work together create inclusive and nurturing learning environments.
